MATTHEW 20:17-18

Dear Friends in Christ,

I am so happy to be with you once again. Anything mechanical is bound to break sometime and I had some viruses, in spite of my virus program, but The Geek Squad did a few clicks and it was all done and free!

I want to talk about today's Gospel from Matthew 20:17-28.  The mother of James and John approached Jesus with her sons accompanying her. She is about to ask for huge favor from Jesus. Obviously, she does not realize the magnitude of what she is about to ask of Jesus; she does not see truly that he is the Son of God and how powerful and what his place on earth and in heave shall be.

James and John's mothers asks Jesus if her sons can sit in heaven on either side of him. I felt his answer was all encompassing: Will they drink from the same chalice as he? The chalice being his Passion - the imprisonment, the scourging, and the crucifixion.  James and John live on a while and die Martyrs deaths later, but what do we know of Heaven, and who of us who worship the highest of the high would ask such a favor?

God has already prepared your place in heaven because he can see your future. From who you are now to who you will bee until death, so he knows what kind of reward you will receive when you arrive in heaven.

The Apostles John and James have no idea of the costs of the Kingdom's Glory. They see something that they do not understand. But Jesus can see the future, and after many failures, these two apostles will eventually drink from the chalice and be martyred.  Jesus knows that the highest glory, however, has been reserved for others. This is God's Kingdom, and his preparing each one's place and his decisions are far beyond our comprehension.

In your prayers, ask Jesus for enlightenment about the Kingdom of Heaven. Acknowledge that Jesus already loves you so much that he has revealed as much as is earthly possible about the Kingdom of Heaven. Resolve that God will show you the mysteries of His Kingdom. Resolve to honor and cherish God's Kingdom on earth as well as in heaven.

Just knowing that you will be received by Jesus and our Father in heaven is the absolute greatest gift that any of us knows we can expect! Look at the news, look at the weather, times and things are changing fast. But so many continue to go on either not thinking of their salvation OR WORSE, taking it for granted. "We are bleeding time, and burning Grace."*

There is much more to this Gospel, so please read it in its entirety below.

As Jesus was going up to Jerusalem,
he took the Twelve disciples aside by themselves,
and said to them on the way,
“Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem,
and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests
and the scribes,
and they will condemn him to death,
and hand him over to the Gentiles
to be mocked and scourged and crucified,
and he will be raised on the third day.”

Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee approached Jesus with her sons
and did him homage, wishing to ask him for something.
He said to her, “What do you wish?”
She answered him,
“Command that these two sons of mine sit,"
one at your right and the other at your left, in your kingdom.”
Jesus said in reply,
“You do not know what you are asking.
Can you drink the chalice that I am going to drink?”
They said to him, “We can.”
He replied,
“My chalice you will indeed drink,
but to sit at my right and at my left,
this is not mine to give
but is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.”
When the ten heard this,
they became indignant at the two brothers.
But Jesus summoned them and said,
“You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them,
and the great ones make their authority over them felt.
But it shall not be so among you.
Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant;
whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave.
Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve
and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
