AT THE CROSS

SPIRITUAL GEMS

The Key is Actually Living One's Consecration...Here is How the Saints Did It

To live one's Consecration sincerely ( and St. Louis De Montfort says most don't do this) means to impregnate one's whole life with it. To attain to that end, we must recall it often and renew it frequently. The times to do this are when we awake, at morning prayer, at Holy Communion,  during difficult moments of the day, when we are tempted to sin and during the night examen.  Little by little with practice and perseverance, calling on Mary to help us, we will constantly call Mary into every thought, word and act and truly live the Consecration completely.  But what is more important than multiplying the times we renew it, is the care we put into it, especially seeking to place our entire will and all our whole soul into this effort.

The Grace of the Flame of Love of the Immaculate Heart of Mary is a Gift from God through His Mother to purposely help us accelerate the living of one's Consecration and it further allows us to more easily and securely live this Consecration at each moment of the day.  Since our whole purpose is to imitate Jesus, and the Consecration allows us to do just that much better than we ever could with our own efforts, are we not foolish if we fail to know, desire and accept the Grace of the Flame of Love of the Immaculate Heart of Mary,  which is an Extraordinary Grace for these times that God begs us to accept?

Taken primarily from "Life of Union With Mary" by Fr. Emil Neubert, SM (Please go to www.flameoflove.us to learn more about the Church approved exercises and messages that complete the Devotion to Mary's Immaculate Heart).

A question from Abbey: Is it possible for a mental state agony to be present when one trusts and has hope in God?

DEEP THOUGHTS

This Day's Thought from The Ranch
Strength is found in weakness.  Control is found in dependency.  Power is found in surrender.
Dan Allender

This Day's Verse
Remember your word to your servant, for you have given me hope.  My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life.
Psalm 119:49-50
The New International Version

This Day's Smile
What sunshine is to flowers, smiles are to humanity.  They are but trifles, to be sure; but, scattered along life’s pathway, the good they do is inconceivable.

Joseph Addison

~*~

I can think of none better of whom I have ever read nor witnessed such a devotion to Jesus than St. Theresa of Liseux. That devotion was so strong that she intentionally put herself into situations that would call upon her stamina, her will and her desire to be worthy.  She never felt that she was doing enough Penance or enough labor in the convent for her sisters.  She eventually planted the famous garden of flowers that we have ever heard of, in soil that used to grow nothing, yet her flowers were the most amazing and beautiful beyond words.

St. Theresa finally figured herself out, but she didn't want this world.  She yearned achingly to be with Jesus, so much so that it is a wonder if she willed herself to die at a very young age of 34 (I believe that number is correct or close).

No matter what was put upon her, she cried and begged Jesus to put more on her so that she would be worthy of His Burning Love! St. Theresa surrendered to Jesus when she was just a child. There is no one of which I am aware who ever surrendered so deeply and passionately that she not a care for power nor anyone's recognition than that of her Jesus. Although I do believe she had won the power of the strictest spirit at the time of her death. She was a beautiful flower, how could Jesus refuse her any longer.  She had gone through pain, suffering, ill health, her place in the convent, all for Him. And He loved/loves her just as He loves you and me. Jesus has no degree of love.  It is the purest of love that is known to mankind.  I, too, seek to please my Savior and God. I question a LOT of my ways and I fall so very, very far down the line to St.Theresa. I can do better than this!

And thus, "Remember your word to your servant, for you have given me hope.  My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life." ~Psalm 119:49-50 Here we have something similar to what St.Theresa desired.  To give us home in the times of suffering and preserve our lives, not here, but "there". While reminding Jesus of his promise resulting in the Hope of the world, the Psalmist seeks and finds comfort in his suffering because it "preserves" his life.  It is not the preservation of life on earth that is desired, but life everlasting.  Don't you realize that our lives on this earth are just a speckle of sand on a huge beach. They are preparing us for life eternal, if that is what we desire.  There are 100's of ways to live and worship on your spiritual journey.  God and Jesus know what is in your heart; you need not recite it in prayers, but you need a comfortable relationship with both so you can discuss it and then, wait for His answers.  But don't hang your coat on one hinge, seek out how you can better serve Him, the Father, your fellow man.  It is the gifts that are granted to you that you are obligated to share and bring hope to others, so get to it!

As for today's Smile, I am unwell and I'm afraid I lost my smile.  And I apologize to my closest friend and confidante that I would not smile for him today.  Next time, dear heart, next time.

More muscles to frown than to smile! We've all heard it and it's true. The smiles will come naturally and easily if you are on the narrow road in your spiritual journey. Life is richer, happier, full of oohhhs and ahhhhs, happiness abounds, and it just feels downright good to smile at someone and see they're smiling back at you.  So don't be stingy - share your smile.  Life is good, life is happy in the Lord, life is happy in your living and in your ultimate goal: TO ONE DAY SEE THE FACE OF GOD!

God bless you, all my friends who have prayed for me and my current malady.  It was the perfect time for God to teach me a lesson, and I leave you with this from my heart.
On the way to the emergency room last evening, I was praying and I was praying that whatever this thing was, it was not going to be the thing I feared and cut short my life.  VERY SELFISH WAS I!  I said the prayer of the sick and the first part always rings true: "for in our suffering we are joined with You (Jesus Christ)". And when that came into my prayer, I immediately stopped right where I was and began anew. "No Lord, I am very sorry. That was very selfish.  I want to be joined with Christ! This cross you have given me is getting awfully heavy, and I want to ask You to ease up, but I cannot, for I am carrying the Cross of Jesus Christ and You know my weakness and my strength and will not give me anything I cannot handle. So give me more, Lord, give me everything I need to learn how to be worthy of Heaven and Your Graces."

Lovingly in Jesus Christ,
Abbey

SPIRITUAL GEMS

Where Mary Is...so Is the Person of the Holy Spirit

Mary in whom the Holy Spirit dwells in a special way, evokes the Holy Spirit in all other creatures...in us!  The most notable example is Elizabeth when Mary visited her.  Mary, who always carries Jesus within her in a mystical way, still seeks to bring a dynamic, personal relationship with the Holy Spirit into each of our lives, so that we are also "filled with the Holy Spirit"; and thus we will also often break into spontaneous and joy filled praise of God for her as our Advocate by saying: "Blessed are thou among woman and blessed is the fruit of thy womb."

When we are aware of the Holy Spirit's constant presence in our soul as baptized and confirmed Catholics free of mortal sin, we will also often break into praise and worship of God with "joy and the Holy Spirit" as we proclaim with Mary..."my soul proclaims the greatness of The Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior."  Speak often to the Holy Spirit dwelling in your soul...He is the Person appropriated to bring you to holiness...He is the Sanctifier!  Ask Mary to intercede for the Gifts of the Holy Spirit,  especially to know Him as a Person!

ST. PEREGRINE NOVENA - DAY 6

Peace be with you!

Through the witness of the saints, we know that suffering has meaning. Many saints accepted suffering while others even asked for more of it. They did so because they were motivated by love and by a desire to join Christ in redemptive suffering - however painful and long.

Let's pray today for all cancer patients and others who are suffering. Let's pray that their suffering will not rob them of joy.

Here are the novena prayers for today:
Day 6 (January 24th) - Saint Peregrine Novena for Cancer Patients
Dear holy servant of God, St. Peregrine, we pray today for healing.
Intercede for us! God healed you of cancer and others were healed by your prayers. Please pray for the physical healing of…
(Mention your intentions)
These intentions bring us to our knees seeking your intercession for healing.
We are humbled by our physical limitations and ailments. We are so weak and so powerless. We are completely dependent upon God. And so, we ask that you pray for us…
Pray for us, that we will not let sickness bring us to despair.
Pray for us, that we may persevere in hope.
Pray for us, that we will have the courage to offer up our suffering in unity with the Cross.
Pray for us, that the loneliness of our suffering will be consoled.
Pray for us, that the fear of death will be replaced with the hope of everlasting life.
Pray for us, that our suffering will not rob us of joy.
We know, St. Peregrine, that you are a powerful intercessor because your life was completely given to God. We know that in as much as you pray for our healing, you are praying even more for our salvation.
A life of holiness like yours is more important than a life free of suffering and disease. Pray for our healing, but pray even more that we might come as close to Our Lord as you are.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be. Amen.

ST. PEREGRINE NOVENA - DAY 5

Some, but not all, of you have signed up to receive John Paul and Annie's Novena's. I had stopped posting as one Twitter friend advised me that they already receive these by mail. That''s terrific, but I'm afraid that his comment caused me to stop posting them for fear of duplication.  However, I will continue to post them for those who may miss them otherwise, as they are so important to our spiritual lives.

~*~

Peace be with you!

While St. Peregrine was cured of his cancer miraculously, many people will not experience that same healing. But everyone does have the chance of enjoying an even greater reward: everlasting life with God.
So today let's pray for everyone suffering and nearing death.  Let's pray that through their faith, they will not be afraid of death but will have hope in everlasting life with God.
Let's pray that their fear will be relieved, and that their hope will be strengthened.

ANSWER: KEEP MOVING FORWARD

Make the least of all that goes and the most of all that comes.  Don’t regret what is past.  Cherish what you have.  Look forward to all that is to come.  And most important of all, rely moment by moment on Jesus Christ.
Gigi Graham Tchividjian

~*~

That's quite a list, isn't it?  In a time where life is moving at lightening speed, it is difficult to train one's mind to follow all of the above.

Making the least of all that goes and the most of all that comes is not human instinct. Sure, we can always enjoy and look forward to what is to come, like vacations, a raise at the office or a bonus, birthdays, raising children, and so forth. Those are fairly normal situations that all of us face.  In losing, we may lose a love relationship, a best friend, move away from family due to business or career, lose our job (double downer), or lose someone we love.  How can we look positively at these things and see a silver lining? When one is in the depths of despair, it is extremely hard to pull oneself together and begin anew from scratch.  And it is even more difficult to recognize the good things that one has in life. From family, to a good job, to a good relationship with God and Jesus Christ, to be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel and not give in to loss.

Making the most of all that comes even applies to the negatives that I listed above. A person of strong faith will recover more easily than an individual who has no real relationship with Christ.  In your heart lies Jesus and the Holy Spirit.  Are you using their advice, praying for their guidance, and most importantly, do you TRUST THEM, that they will make the most of all that comes and turn around that stroke of bad luck ("satan")? When will  all learn that we are nothing without Jesus Christ and never look back.  It is over and done, and will do nothing to aid your spiritual journey.  Look forward with gladness.

I have a friend with whom I hold a special bond.  Her ship has been sinking for some time. I saw it coming a long time ago.  I began to gently counsel her about her spending and then not having enough left to pay bills or even put gas in her car to get to work. She didn't listen and she is now completely at the bottom of the barrel.  She said "I pray but God has done nothing or me!"  I ask her, "what have you done for Him?"

What people fail to grasp about Jesus Christ and Almighty God is that, yes, they are there FOR YOU! They want desperately for you to call on them.  But when you live a sinful life and ask God every day to help you with your problems, and then still continue to live in sin, why should He help you?  Faith, truth, grace is to be lived! You must live a Christ-like existence. Stop your sinful ways and give your whole heart to Jesus Christ, and then BELIEVE IN IT AND LIVE IT! Then, you will begin to see miraculous changes in your life. Mind you, the answers do not come immediately. But you must tune in to Christ and listen for him, and when you recognize some little gift in your life that could come from no place or anyone but Jesus Christ, stop a moment and thank Him and give God all of the Glory.

In living for Jesus Christ, one looks forward to each new day with wonder - what blessings shall I receive today? I just can't wait to see what Jesus has in store for me. This is not to say that nothing will always be perfect. No, you will have trials as long as satan roams the earth, but recognizing that he is trying to get you to admit defeat should bolster your faith in Christ and God, and you can cast him back to the fires of hell!  Yes, you can do this or you can call upon Jesus to cast satan away from your life.  But a warming: he will sneak in every little cracked door of doubt and pounce on you causing negative thoughts and a feeling of not knowing what to do.  What to do???? I'll say it again, CALL UPON JESUS AND THE FATHER FOR HELP. Unleash your burdens and you will feel 100% better.

As it says, most importantly, "rely moment to moment on Jesus Christ." Dear Ones, I would not be here telling you this had I not received his Graces and experienced this for myself.  So many years wasted when God was there all along.  But I didn't want to live that kind of life. The life satan drove me to is what I THOUGHT I wanted. Oh what a difference in having the love and protection of Christ and God the Father.  Some people are shy, they can't have a conversation about faith, hope and love of the Holy Trinity for feeling embarrassed somehow.  That is how I used to be.  Now, I want a megaphone on my car and I want to drive through the streets proclaiming His dying for our salvation. Heaven is going to be such a beautiful, beautiful place.  It is unimaginable to earthy life.

Make up your mind:  Do you want to spend eternity in hades? or Do you want to spend eternity in Paradise with the Savior and the Father, the angels and saints, and our most blessed Mother, Mary! God gives you a choice, you know. It's called "free will." It's up to you to make the right one.  God bless you in your spiritual journey.

Lovingly in Christ,

BE STILL, AND LISTEN ....

God of our life, there are days when the burdens we carry chafe our shoulders and weigh us down; when the road seems dreary and endless, the skies gray and threatening; when our lives have no music in them, and our hearts are lonely, and our souls have lost their courage.  Flood the path with light, run our eyes to where the skies are full of promise; tune our hearts to brave music; give us the sense of comradeship with heroes and saints of every age; and so quicken our spirits that we may be able to encourage the souls of all who journey with us on the road of life, to your honor and glory.
~Augustine
~*~

Well, this all seems pretty dreary and hopeless, doesn't it?  My heart and soul are in a place, as I spoke yesterday, of being down in the doldrums.  I got busy and unpacked my suitcase and cleaning out around the house all of the clutter left over from Christmas.  Before I knew it, it was 3:00pm.  Busy hands are good for the mind.

When we feel like the first sentence of the quote of Augustine, satan has an open door to come in and take over your thoughts and make you think and do things that you KNOW are not of God.  We have to learn to recognize that when we get this low, this lonely, no music and no joy, it is the most urgent of times to get with God and have a good, long talk with him.  Ask The Holy Spirit to come into your heart and to help you, lift you and carry you through. He will; I promise. But he comes as an ambassador of God; he is doing God's work inside our hearts and our minds.  My mantra: Let The Holy Spirit be your guide through life.

When you go to God, he already knows you are hurting. He awaits your prayer and conversation with him.

We've all heard "Be still and listen; and know that I am God."  Are you still; do you give Him time to answer you?

I'll tell you a little about my experience with prayer  This is the time when I know God is awaiting my words from the deepest part of my heart and soul. Things that He miraculously already knows, but that He needs to hear in my own words what is going on with me.  I don't just confess my hurt to him.  I talk actually TALK to Him just as I do naturally to people.  It is as if I were talking to someone in the room, but there is no one there but me and my God. I pause periodically for a good period of time, concentrate on my union with God, and clear my mind of everything but my God and I patiently wait.  Sometimes, He will question me about this or that.  I answer him and I cry with joy that I am having this one-on-one conversation with God.  I continue to talk and pause all the way through my prayer time, until all has been said, and God has nothing more to say.

I'm a big baby, I admit it.  But these things I tell you well into the deepest recesses of my heart and I fall from knees to just sitting on the floor, and I cry as remembering the things he placed inside my mind; I cry from the greatest gift of all. They are tears of happiness.

You can experience this same joy, but your heart must be open to it; you must BE LIEVE that He will speak to you in your mind.  I want to caution you to not pray aloud for satan will also hear about your weaknesses and he will keep using them to hurt you.  Instead, pray in silence to God. Your prayer is for His ears only.  He will hear your every word and know your every feeling.

All things in total bring about a feeling of being free, like you could fly like a bird, the weight that was so heavy having lifted.  And if you truly trust him, and you GIVE HIM a trouble or situation and say "please take care of this for me", have FAITH and PATIENCE.  God doesn't work by our time, but in his own time and it may take a while for all the things to fall into place and your prayer answered. The problem with most people is they expect an immediate answer. I assure you that if God has spoken to you, HE HAS IT and you are to LET GO of it and go back to living happily.

Do you know that I have prayed to God for his help in a situation for YEARS? Yes, years.  I have not received an answer in prayer except to be patient.

Encouraging souls who are with me on my journey, who have problems that weigh them down, I do through my writing.  If I can bring one soul a day, a week, than I am tremendously joyful. You are NOT a child of satan; you ARE a child of Almighty God and in him, you may put your complete trust.  Hard at first, but seeing is believing and if you pay attention to things and people around you, it is astounding the nuances that you notice that seem to have directly to you, directly from Him.  And you cannot help but smile and feel the Glory of God inside your soul.

Oh What a Feeling!

Lovingly in Christ,
Abbey

DEEP THOUGHTS

This Day's Thought from The Ranch
We fail in the work of grace and love when there is too much of us and not enough of God.
Suzanne Woods Fisher

This Day's Verse
Whoever has no rule over his own spirit Is like a city broken down, without walls.
Proverbs 25:28
The New King James Version

This Day's Smile
God sees hearts as we see faces.

George Herbert

~*~

It seems I've been gone forever and a day! I am so glad to be back home and to be able to write about all things Heavenly for you!

I can speak on This Day's Thought and Verse at the same time. I have been there. No, I AM there.

If I am nothing else, I am honest and I will be honest with you.  Things got out of hand as Christmas approached.  I flew out to accompany my elderly parents back to my home for two weeks to celebrate Christmas, New Year's and my Daddy and my smallest grands' birthdays. Do you get my drift? I'll keep going then ......

My mom and dad are 83 and I have told you a while ago, maybe more than once, that my mother is a stroke victim.  She is doing very good and I'm very proud of her.  But there are things she cannot do by herself because her right arm/hand could not be rehabilitated.  That means I had to help her with her baths, help dry her, dress her and blow dry her hair. This was every other day and believe you me, I was a ball of sweat whenever I finished.  All the lifting and help took a toll on my back, but I would never, ever let her know.  It was most certainly a labor of love, every other day.

We cooked, ate, got up early, had company ever day, clean-up, and I had the greatest blessing of having our entire family at dinner for Christ's Birthday Celebration!

We took my mother to Knoxville, TN to see her older brother, spent the night and she saw him the next morning before we left for Nashville, her home town.  Our mission was to place fresh flowers on Granny's (mom's mother) grave.  That was a 3-hour drive, and then we headed home which was 3 more hours.

I had to fly home with them also.  My poor daddy, it breaks my heart to observe him and see the panic in his verbiage and physical movements.  The man with the really big shoulders, the man who raised me and has always been there fore me, the man who disciplined me when it was warranted, but most of all, loved me as hard as a parent can, is now dependent on me for many things.  It hurts, a lot.

In the midst of all of this activity, I lost touch with Jesus and our God.  I might have said a little prayer about this or that, but I wasn't present with the Lord.  I was so tired and so much of my time was required that I lost touch with Him.  I am suffering for having lost touch, being present with Him, spending alone time with him, giving my heart to him.  Oh, he knows what is on my heart, but he wants me to tell him, all of it.

So, there was "too much of us and not enough of Him" and my Spirit was like a broken down city with no walls.  It's an awful feeling.  Each of you have probably experienced this at some point in your spiritual journey. I have so many pent up emotions and I still have not let go of them. It's going to take some time to fully decompress from all that has happened in the last month.  Did I mention that my best friend and also my best friend from high school each lost the last living parent they had? What could I do but send them words of condolence and consolation, and I did.  But it brought home the point that I have both of mine still living but I see the life trickling slowly away and I feel hollow with dread. What will I do without either one or both of them?

I need my Lord and my God so much at this moment! I am nothing without them. My joy is gone, my enjoyment of life has faltered, and I feel so alone and full of emptiness.  I need you Jesus.  I need you God. You give me great joy; your love carries me to places many people have never been, and it is those people that I need to reach the most!

"God sees the heart; we see the faces."  True, but I have this uncanny ability to read people. But if you do not know the stranger in the grocery store, how do you reach out to them and let them know that it's going to be okay, God and Jesus are with them?

What I do is push my buggy around and in a position where I'm in their way or I pretend I'm looking at the same thing on the shelf that they are and I initiate small talk.  In the end, blessings are wished aloud and beautiful days are wished, or blessed days are expressed with the deepest expression of sincerity possible.  I've done it and I feel great for having done it.  I see in their faces a tiny bit of what God is seeing in their hearts, and I am compelled to bring the love of Jesus and God into their lives even if it is just friendliness, warmth, and a wish that they feel blessed.  You never know how you have affected someone, but I leave that up to our God.  I am a disciple. I work for Christ and I don't know if my words have brought a soul closer to Him or not.  I only see the face; but Christ and God see the heart.

Oh, how very blessed we all are! If you are honest with yourself, even in the face of adversity where I am sitting at this moment, you can find a great many blessings.  These are the things that show you that it is the JOY of living under the wing of God that makes our lives joyful, better, bigger and brighter.

Will you do one thing for me? Will you stop now and ask yourself how many blessings you have and what they are?  I just know in my heart that you are going to feel better than you felt before you stopped to engage your mind with God's and count your blessings.

And so, I leave you with my prayer of God's blessings on each one of you, that He works as you need Him in your life, and that you live with Joy in your heart.

Lovingly in Christ,
Abbey

ST. PEREGRINE NOVENA FOR CANCER PATIENTS - DAY 1

Peace be with you!

Today is the first day of the Saint Peregrine Novena for Cancer Patients

Saint Peregrine suffered with cancer on his foot and he was told it needed to be amputated. So St. Peregrine turned to the cross and prayed. He did not allow his illness to bring him to despair, but rather it brought him closer to the cross, even through his suffering.

So today, let's pray for all cancer patients -- that their illness will not bring them to despair.

Okay, let's get to praying!

ST. THERESA WISDOM

The legion of little souls, the victims of merciful love, will become as numerous as the stars of Heaven and the sands of the seashore...I am only a child, powerless and weak,  and yet it is my weakness that gives me the boldness of offering myself as a VICTIM of Your Love, O Jesus!...Yes, in order that Love be fully satisfied, it is necessary that Love lower Itself to nothingness and transform this nothingness into FIRE....that I may become a Martyr of your Love!

This Day's Thought from The Ranch
For one man who can introduce another to Jesus Christ by the way he lives and by the atmosphere of his life, there are a thousand who can only talk jargon about him.

New Year Greetings to each of you. Posts will be infrequent for a short period as I've accompanied my elderly parents home following a beautiful, fun and happy Christmas. I'll be here for a few days and it's quite a feat to do justice to my writing on an iPhone.

I feel the Lord God is closer to us all. I feel everyone needs to pray for forgiveness of our sinful ways after He died so that ALL MAY LIVE! It is very urgent that you pray, pray, pray.

In 2015, everyone needs to learn to pay it forward. Kindness, even in the face of adversity is the way of the cross. Our Holy Mother anxiously awaits your Rosary, your prayer of petitions, and conversation with you.

There is much work to do for your salvation and that of others. Try and pray for those who are lost.

God be with each of you. Lovingly in Christ,
Abbey ❤️

GOOD & PERFECT!

"Every good & perfect gift comes from above"
~James 1:17

~*~

Did the piano I wanted so bad and suddenly appeared be considered good and perfect?

I am completely certain that my adoption was good and perfect! I have the greatest parents ever. i was raised in a home full of love gestures: saying "I love you", hugging one another, and having "I love you" said to me before bed every night.  Family vacations every summer to new places - adventures where we stopped at every "tourist attraction" along the way! Getting souvenirs courtesy of mom and dad and lots of pictures and 8mm tapes of all our activities. Yes, I'm certain that this was good and perfect.

I have two children and I am certain they are good and perfect gifts from above! They have been my whole life.  I loved raising them and celebrating all their milestones. Now they are grown and having children of their own, which extends a good and perfect gift to another generation that is my legacy. I am so blessed with wonderful family. And this is good and perfect.

I have bad bones and my health has suffered a few times. I have fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis, and it fears its ugly head quite often. Like St. Theresa, I am thankful to Christ, our ultimate healer, for all maladies as they are good and perfect from heaven above.

I know that it is sometimes hard to accept things that occur and impact our lives negatively. But all is good and perfect because God planned it for a very good reason which may or may not ever be known to us because most people are incapable of seeing our Lord in all things. Make up your mind to see our Lord in all things because His presence your way in life GOOD and PERFECT, for HE IS GOOD AND PERFECT. Be happy, joyful and loving because CHRIST is with you in all things.

I didn't write the following, but enjoyed reading it so I pass it to you. Feel free to copy and share.
